چکیده

Abstract The provenance of raw lapis lazuli used since the Neolithic Age for realization carved artefacts can be pivoting reconstruction ancient trade routes. role main provider this material in times is generally attributed to Badakhshan quarries (Afghanistan), although other deposits could have been exploited as well antiquity. systematic multi-technique analysis rocks coming from four known source areas (located present-day Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Siberia and Chile) has led last years compilation a protocol determination. based on differences physical–chemical properties measured with non-invasive techniques (Ion Beam Analysis (IBA)), making it suitable also precious artefacts. In work, 10 new reference samples Mogok quarry (Myanmar), previously subjected complete petrographic mineralogical characterization, analysed employing $$\mu$$ ? -PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) -IBIL Luminescence) techniques. subdivision Myanmar into three groups, suggested, corroborated by diopside trace elements concentrations. results allow include analytical protocol, indicating that markers such presence/absence wollastonite, altered pyrites Sr content are still valid discriminate Chilean or Siberian ones. New weaker (Zn diopside, Se Cu contents pyrite) proposed discrimination Afghan Tajik provenances; however, arose need investigating mineral phases IBA find strong definitive Southwest Asia.

Multitechnique characterization of lapis lazuli for provenance study.

Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest precious stone, being used for glyptic as early as 7,000 years ago: jewels, amulets, seals, and inlays are examples of objects produced using this material. Only a few sources of lapis lazuli exist in the world due to the low probability of geological conditions in which it can form, so that the possibility to associate the raw material to man-made objects help...

Micro-PIXE in Ecophysiology

Two selected examples of PIXE microanalysis in ecophysiology have been shown. Studies of heavy metal distribution in mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal roots of Plantago lanceolata showed different mechanisms in filtering of Zn/Pb and Fe/Mn, both enabling plants to cope with metals present in the environment. Studies of the mechanism used by the beetle Chrysolina pardalina to eliminate excessive am...

On some Crystals of "Lapis Lazuli"

Due to its unique blue colour, lapis lazuli is used as an ornamental stone. Recently we obtained some dark blue 8 to 12 mm sized dodecahedral crystal from Afghanistan. Similar crystals have been described as crystals of lazurite [1]. The present investigation has been carried out in order to find the nature of these crystals. The colour of massive lapis lazuli is caused by lazurite and hauyne [...
